BWX Technologies, Inc. (BWXT) secured a significant contract worth approximately $174 million from the U.S. Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program for the manufacture of naval nuclear reactor fuel. This essential award reaffirms BWXT’s critical role in maintaining national security and powering the nation’s nuclear-powered fleet.
The contract, officially awarded on September 10, 2025, directs BWXT’s subsidiary, Nuclear Fuel Services, Inc. (NFS), to produce and deliver the highly enriched uranium fuel required for the Naval Reactors Program. Operations for the contract immediately commenced at the NFS facility located in Erwin, Tennessee, a highly secure Category I nuclear facility licensed by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. BWXT expects to complete the work by the summer of 2026.
This fuel will power the backbone of the U.S. Navy’s nuclear fleet, supporting various classes of submarines, including the Ohio, Virginia, Seawolf, Los Angeles, and Columbia-class vessels, as well as the Nimitz and Ford-class aircraft carriers.
Gary Camper, president for BWXT’s Nuclear Operations Group, emphasized that the company takes immense pride in continuing to power the world-class fleet, especially as the Navy recently celebrated its 250th anniversary. Camper lauded the team at NFS, stating they demonstrate the consistent quality and commitment necessary to fuel the Navy’s global mission of ensuring freedom and security worldwide. BWXT’s facility has continuously supported the Navy’s fuel requirements for over six decades, cementing its status as a foundational partner in the nation’s defense infrastructure.
