The U.S. Department of State officially approved a significant foreign military sale (FMS) for Denmark, authorizing the estimated $318.4 million AIM-9X Block II Missile Sale. This massive defense transaction will deliver a substantial upgrade to the NATO ally’s air combat and air defense capabilities, with RTX serving as the principal contractor.
Enhancing Combat Capability
Denmark actively requested up to 340 AIM-9X Block II tactical missiles and 34 associated guidance units, along with training aids, weapon software, and logistics support. The AIM-9X Block II Missile Sale provides Denmark with the latest variant of the renowned Sidewinder missile, an infrared-tracking, short-range air-to-air engagement system.
The Block II variant notably integrates a redesigned fuze, digital ignition safety device, and updated electronics. Crucially, it incorporates a weapon datalink, enabling lock-on-after-launch capabilities for critical beyond-visual-range engagements, significantly expanding the missile’s utility and the operator’s tactical options.
Strengthening Regional Security
The Department of State’s approval strongly supports U.S. foreign policy and national security goals by enhancing a key NATO partner’s defensive posture. The advanced weapons directly strengthen Denmark’s ability to respond to evolving threats and increases stability in the region.
Denmark, which already operates the missile system on its F-35A fighter aircraft and through ground-based air defense units, will easily integrate the new missiles. This strategic AIM-9X Block II Missile Sale demonstrates a shared commitment to regional defense readiness and immediately boosts interoperability with U.S. and allied forces.
