The U.S. Department of State approved a significant potential Foreign Military Sale (FMS) package valued at up to $3.5 billion for the Germany SM-6 Missile Sale. This massive defense transaction positions RTX (through its Raytheon business) as the principal contractor, delivering crucial missile systems to the European ally. The sale includes an authorization for Germany to acquire up to 173 Standard Missile 6 Block I (SM-6) and 577 Standard Missile 2 Block IIIC (SM-2) systems, alongside necessary support and equipment.
These advanced weapons will equip Germany’s future F127-class surface combatants utilizing the cutting-edge Aegis Weapon System. The multi-mission SM-6 missile provides critical anti-air, anti-surface, and sea-based terminal ballistic missile defense capabilities. Simultaneously, the globally utilized SM-2 systems offer robust defense against incoming aircraft and anti-ship missiles.
The U.S. government, facilitated by the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA), views this proposed transfer as a major step that strengthens Germany’s integrated air and missile defense capabilities. This substantial Germany SM-6 Missile Sale enhances interoperability with U.S. and NATO naval forces, helping the nation actively counter current and emerging maritime threats. RTX will perform production and support activities for the FMS package across multiple U.S. locations, including facilities in Arkansas, Arizona, and Alabama.
