Raytheon, an RTX business, has secured a significant NASAMS contract valued at $698.9 million from the U.S. Army to provide advanced air defense fire units. This firm-fixed-price award, processed through the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) program, ensures the delivery of the National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System units. The Army Contracting Command obligated the full contract value using FMS funds, initiating a commitment that runs through early 2031.
Bolstering International Air Defense
The procurement explicitly supports Taiwan, reinforcing the island nation’s ability to defend against evolving aerial threats. This long-term industrial commitment sees Raytheon produce the NASAMS fire units in Tewksbury, Massachusetts, with an estimated completion date of February 28, 2031. The delivery of these systems marks a decisive step in strengthening Taiwan’s layered air and missile defense architecture.
The Power of NASAMS
The NASAMS system is a proven, medium-range air defense solution developed collaboratively by Raytheon and Norway’s Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace. The system gives air defenders the capability to effectively identify, engage, and destroy threats, including fixed and rotary wing aircraft, unmanned aerial vehicles, and emerging cruise missiles.
NASAMS achieves its adaptability by integrating key components, such as a multi-mission radar, a fire distribution center, and a suite of missiles, often including the AIM-120 AMRAAM. This crucial NASAMS contract enables a key ally to enhance its security posture dramatically.
