The U.S. Department of State formally approved the potential Foreign Military Sale (FMS) of 100 Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missiles with Extended Range (JASSM-ER) and related equipment to the Government of Italy. This critical Italy JASSM-ER FMS carries an estimated value of $301 million. The approval strengthens the strategic defense capabilities of a key NATO ally and positions Lockheed Martin as the principal contractor responsible for manufacturing the advanced weapon systems.
Enhancing Long-Range Strike Capability
The proposed sale advances U.S. foreign policy and national security objectives by significantly bolstering Italy’s ability to counter current and future threats. Italy requires this stand-off, long-range strike capability for use on its fighter aircraft, including the F-35 Lightning IIs. The Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA), which delivered the required certification notifying Congress of the possible sale, emphasized the role this package plays in reinforcing a critical allied defense partner.
Missile Systems and Support
The JASSM-ER, officially designated AGM-158B/B-2, is a precision cruise missile designed for long-range, air-to-ground missions. The weapon system’s AGM-158B-2 upgrade provides a modernized Missile Control Unit and a new JASSM GPS Anti-jam Receiver, ensuring high-performance engagement capability.
Italy’s procurement covers 100 of these advanced missiles along with essential support elements. The package includes vital JASSM classified test equipment, KGV-135A encryption devices, weapon system software, technical documentation, transportation support, training, and U.S. government and contractor services. The success of this Italy JASSM-ER FMS helps secure interoperability and collective defense across the Atlantic alliance.
