Intuitive Machines has dramatically expanded its capabilities, agreeing to acquire Lanteris Space Systems from Advent International in a pivotal $800 million deal.
The space technology provider announced the transaction, which consists of $450 million in cash and $350 million in stock, with an expected close in the first quarter of 2026. This strategic acquisition immediately transforms Intuitive Machines, transitioning the company from a lunar-focused provider to a leading multi-domain space prime positioned for major government and commercial contracts.
A New Vertically Integrated Powerhouse
CEO Steve Altemus emphasized that the acquisition marks a fundamental shift, setting the pace for how the industry’s next generation will operate. The move creates a vertically integrated space company that controls the entire mission lifecycle.
Intuitive Machines now oversees operations ranging from designing and manufacturing spacecraft to conducting complex missions spanning Earth orbit, the Moon, Mars, and beyond.
The combined entity projects a formidable financial position, reporting a total revenue of $850 million and a combined backlog of $920 million as of September 30. This financial strength and expanded scope significantly enhance the company’s competitiveness for lucrative government work.
Strengthening National Security Capabilities
Lanteris, previously operating as a part of Maxar Space Systems, establishes itself as a premier spacecraft manufacturer within the newly integrated entity. The company is renowned for delivering highly reliable satellites and space technologies critical for national security, civil, and commercial operations.
Lanteris has successfully overseen the deployment of more than 95 geostationary communications satellites, most notably the resilient Lanteris 1300 series.
Advent International, the seller, noted their previous strategy focused on positioning Lanteris for sustainable growth by pivoting and investing heavily in national security priorities, including enabling next-generation missile defense for the US government.
Building a Deep-Space Ecosystem
The Lanteris acquisition builds on Intuitive Machines’ previous strategic investments to create a comprehensive space ecosystem. Just months prior, the company completed the purchase of aerospace firm KinetX, a move that strengthened its deep-space navigation and constellation management capabilities.
Together, these acquisitions position Intuitive Machines to compete for large, complex, multi-agency contracts across the Department of Defense and civil space organizations like the National Aeronautics and Administration NASA.
